Where Monks did their Business
This was the monks' toilet.
- They sat over holes in wooden
benches. Everything fell straight down into the river running
underneath the building to be washed
clean away.
- The monks were spoilt. Running
water in houses was very unusual in medieval times.
- Ordinary people didn't have
toilets. They used cess pits, or just went in the
street!
